JONESPORT – Lorna May Urquhart Merritt, 77, wife of the late Shirley G. Merritt Sr., died Monday, July 12, 2004, at the Sunrise Care Facility in Jonesport surrounded by members of her loving family. She was born Dec. 13, 1926, in Jonesport, the second daughter of Hallie and Albertina Urquhart. Lorna attended Jonesport schools and during her early years, worked at the William Underwood Company and Gray’s Shellfish, both in Jonesport. She then spent her time raising her family of eight. With her husband, she owned and operated a small neighborhood store for a short while. She enjoyed making wreaths, playing beano, and giving to others. She will be remembered as a good sister, mother, “Nanny,” aunt, and friend. In addition to her husband, Lorna was predeceased by her mother and father; her sister, Aretta Urquhart Norton; her brothers, Harry Urquhart and Hallie Urquhart Jr.; her son, Shirley G. Merritt Jr., and her daughter, Evelyn Alley. Surviving are her sisters, Dorothy Murray and Frances Kilton, her brother Percy Urquhart; her daughters, Julia MacLean and her husband, Vincent, Arlene Smith and her husband, Dwight, Cathy Merritt, Florence Leighton and her fianc?, Denny Farnsworth; her sons, Alberton Merritt and his wife, Carla, and Sheldon Merritt; a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Merritt; grandchildren, Vinnie MacLean and his wife, Sally, Lorna MacLean and her fianc?, David Foss, Francena Puente and her husband, James, Myra Merritt, Kate DePorter and her husband, Troy, Alberton Merritt Jr., Lawrence Merritt, Jillian Alley, Mattie Alley and her fianc?, Wendall Hinkley, Hattie Alley, Sam Leighton, and Kirk Leighton; step-grandchildren, Beverly Lutz and her husband, Scott, and Dwight Smith Jr.; 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many dear friends. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Sunday, July 25, 2004, at Greenwood Cemetery with Pastor George Woodward officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be at Cathy Merritt’s home, 905 Mason Bay Road, following the ceremony.
