SORRENTO – Louis “Lou” Sutherland, 81, passed away Nov. 26, 2006, at his residence. He was born July 18, 1925, in Lincoln, the son of Earl and Hazel (McLaughlin) Sutherland. Lou obtained his master’s degree at Colby College. He taught chemistry and physics at Sumner High School, Sullivan for 12 years and taught the same subjects for 16 years at Eastern Maine Community College, Bangor. He was Sorrento’s very dedicated first selectman for more than 40 years and also served as plumbing inspector for Sorrento. Lou loved the outdoors, traveling, dancing and most of all, spending time with his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife and soul mate of 51 years, Nadine “Bobbie” (Fenton) Sutherland; sons, Louis Sutherland Jr. and wife, Penny, of Sorrento and Brent Sutherland and significant other, Diane, of Hampden; daughter, Colleen Slaney and husband, Scott, of Fairfield; brother, John Sutherland; sisters, Doris Cox of Wisconsin, Shirley Ordway of Colorado and Gay Rump of Bangor; grandchildren, Jaime and Bryan Slaney of Fairfield; and great-grandchild, Brayden Mitchell of Fairfield. He was predeceased by a son, Bryant; and brothers, Searle, Phillip, Keith, Blaine and Robert. Calling hours will be held 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 30. Fellowship will be held immediately after the service at Sorrento Community Center. Contributions in Lou’s memory may be made to the Sorrento Fire Department Auxiliary, 79 Pomola Ave., Sorrento, ME 04677. All proceeds will go to replace the flagpole at the town pier.
