BANGOR – Louis V. Morelli, 84, died Nov. 21, 2003, in Bangor. Louis was born on Nov. 7, 1919, in Port land, and grew up on Munjoy Hill. He graduated from Portland High School. He served in the U.S. Navy on the Navy destroyer the Bonhomme Richard during World War II. After the war, he attended Husson College in Bangor and received an Accounting Degree. He worked for the Bangor Commercial Newspaper, and also cooked part-time at the Baltimore Restaurant. He subsequently worked for the Maine Sunday Telegram newspaper for over 35 years. In his job as District Manager, he hired and supervised thousands of young boys and girls as newspaper carriers. Louis also coached Brewer Farm and Little League baseball for nearly 50 years. He coached hundreds of children over that time, as well as their children and grandchildren, on the many teams he took to championships. To acknowledge the many years of coaching, Louis and two other dedicated baseball coaches were honored by having the Brewer Pendleton Street Athletic field renamed Corey/ Debeck/Morelli Field. Louis loved the Fire Dept. and Police Dept., and was often seen at fires, serving coffee, taking photographs for the newspaper or helping out in any way he could. In the early 1960s, he climbed out of the top floor window at the burning Union Street Fire Dept. in Bangor to save the flag. Over the years, he had many friends at the Bangor Fire Dept., as well as other local agencies. In recent years Louis took great pride in being a volunteer for the Bangor Fire Museum. Formerly a member of the Bangor Jaycees and Kiwanis, he was a member of the Bangor Noontime Lions Club. Louis helped with many charitable causes, including raising money to help the sight-impaired to have seeing-eye dogs. He served lunches with the Lions Club at the Salvation Army. His good humor will be missed by all at the club. Louis leaves a wife, Pat Morelli, of Bangor; three children, including daughter, Carol and her husband, William Jordan, of Portland and their daughters, Mira and Juliana; a son, Thomas Morelli and his wife Karen, of Brewer, Thomas’ son, Scott Morelli, his partner, Beth and daughter, Olivia; and a son, James Morelli of Wilmington, Del.; also step-daughters and husbands, Mr. and Mrs. Jacque Chabot, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Simpson, and Mr. and Mrs. William Klekotta.
