LOUISE K. ZACHARIAS BANGOR and BROOKE-VILLE, Md. – Lousie K. Zacharias, 87, wife of the late Fred W. Zacharias, died Oct. 29, 2003, at a Bangor healthcare center. She was born April 13, 1916, in Brewer, the daughter of T. Edward and Louise (Dougherty) Hayes. Louise was a 1934 graduate of Brewer High School, graduated from Beal College, Bangor and subsequently had a diverse working life. She was a secretary during World War II at the Pentagon in the office of the Secretary of Defense, delivering encoded messages. In fact, one such message was from General Patton to the Secretary of Defense stating how close he was to the Rhine, and the German lines. After her marriage, she and Fred together owned and operated the well-known Town & Country Restaurant in Wheaton, Md. Additionally, she and her husband raised and trained thoroughbred racehorses and maintained several farms in the area. Louise later worked at the National Institute of Health as an administrative assistant in Neurological Grant Studies. She was an intelligent, dignified, and independent woman who always had a quick smile and a witty comment for all she met. In 2001 she moved back to her birthplace to be nearer to her family. Our lives will be forever enriched by the special times we spent together. She is survived by nieces and nephews, Karen Achorn-Ingalls and her husband, Jeffrey, of Bangor, James Hayes and Julie Cameron of Brewer, Joseph Hayes and his wife, Susan, of Brewer, Kathryn Hayes-Hallowell and her husband, James, of Cape Elizabeth, Maura Emerson and her husband, Guillermo Olivos of Germantown, Md. She was predeceased by a brother, Paul; and a sister, Marguerite. A funeral service will be held 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at Kiley Funeral Home, 69 State St., Brewer with the Rev. Richard McLaughlin, pastor of St. John’s Catholic Church, officiating. Friends may call 2 p.m. Monday until the time of the service. Committal and burial will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Silver Spring, Md.
