ELLSWORTH – Lt. Cmdr. Albert “Al” Bedard, retired, 77, died Jan. 20, 2007, at an Ellsworth hospital. He was born Oct. 8, 1929, in Woonsocket, R.I., the son of Albert and Loretta (Fugere) Bedard. Al served in the U.S. Navy for 30 years, retiring as lieutenant commander. He and his wife, Mary, co-owned the Montgomery Ward Store, Ellsworth. After selling the business, he worked part-time at O’Brien’s Hardware for a number of years. Al loved to write poetry and wrote a poem for his wife weekly. He also enjoyed painting and family members all were the recipients of paintings and poems. He enjoyed gardening, building birdhouses and his collection of frogs. Al was a member of the Rotary, Knights of Columbus and St. Joseph Catholic Church where he worked in religious education with Mary and they both served as Eucharistic ministers. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Mary; son, Peter M. Bedard and wife, Sue; daughters, Beth A. Bland and husband, Kevin, all of Ellsworth, Mary Jane Daly and husband, Bill, of Albert Lea, Minn., and Rebecca J. Lundberg and husband, Kim, of Austin, Minn.; nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. He will be missed dearly by his canine jack russell friend, Sophie; and feline friends, Maggie and Smudges. He was predeceased by three sisters, Muriel, Estelle and Lucille. Callings hours will be held 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 231 Main St., Ellsworth, with Fr. Scott Mower, celebrant. Interment will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Ellsworth.
