PALMYRA and STETSON – Lucian O. Savage, 90, died Jan. 10, 2006, at a Pittsfield nursing home. He was born Nov. 8, 1915, in Chester, a son of Elwin and Emma (Johnson) Savage. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired from the active reserves as a major. A graduate of Newport High School, Lucian received a business diploma from Beal’s College, a degree and teaching certificate from the Maine School of Commerce and a Bachelor of Science degree in education from the University of Maine at Orono. He was a member of the Stetson Union Church, serving as the Sunday school superintendent and church organist. More recently, he attended the Calvary Baptist Church in Newport. He was an active member of the Grange for 75 years as a member and past master of Sebasticook Grange No. 306 of Newport, serving as secretary for 25 years. He was a member of East Somerset Pomona Grange No. 28. He served on several state Grange committees and in the East Somerset and Piscataquis Pomona jurisdictions for many years. He and his wife Ruth also served as deputy state masters for several years and enjoyed traveling across the state. Lucian owned and operated a general store in Stetson and Palmyra for many years. He is survived by three daughters, Brenda and husband, Sherman Cookson and Rachel Wilson, all of Stetson and Priscilla McLaughlin and husband, Steve, of Milford; one sister, Marion Knowlton of Bangor; eight grandchildren, Eric Cookson, Gretchen Violette, Jason Willard, Tony Wilson, Nicole LaBree, Walter, Stephen and Andrew Horelick; 10 great-grandchildren; and a special nephew and wife, George and Marie Savage. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth (Friend) Savage in 1997; his brothers, John, Merlin, Addison and George; and sisters, Helen Dodge, Beryl Fitts, Catherine Morton and Erma Underhill. Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main St., Newport, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday. Spring burial will be in the Clark’s Hill Cemetery, Stetson.
