VINALHAVEN – Lucille T. Burgess, 91, a lifelong resident of Vinalhaven, died Jan. 3, 2008, in Vinalhaven. Born April 20, 1916, in Vinalhaven, she was the daughter of Joseph W. and Bessie (Fernald) Morton. She was valedictorian of the Class of 1934 of Vinalhaven High School. On June 25, 1941, she married Eugene H. Burgess. Mrs. Burgess had been a member of The Union Church for many years, where she had been active in the Circle and taught Sunday school. She was also active in community groups. Her hobbies included fishing, reading, listening to music, painting and writing poetry. Mrs. Burgess was a very talented artist and a published poet, and had her poetry often published in island’s newspaper, The Wind. Surviving is her daughter, Rachel Clark and her husband, Dana, of Brewer; her granddaughter, Sarah Clark and her husband, Randy Wanat, of Lowell, Mass.; one brother, Edwin J. Morton and his wife, Carolyn, of Rockland; one brother-in-law, Willard C. Chapin of Camden; two sisters-in-law, Louise Bickford and Beatrice Ames, both of Vinalhaven; and several cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Eugene H. Burgess; and a sister, Louise Chapin. Services will be announced in the spring. Memorial donations may be made to The Union Church, P.O.
