MILBRIDGE and ELLSWORTH Lucy C. Palmer, 78, of Milbridge, formerly of Ellsworth, went home to be with her Lord Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. She was born Aug. 17, 1929, in Steuben, the daughter of the late Thadeus Leroy and Gladys Adeleith (Beal) West. Mrs. Palmer was raised in Steuben and local schools and attended the University of Maine, Orono, obtaining a degree in business management. She married Charles T. Palmer of Readsboro, Vt. They owned and operated Palmers General Store, Milbridge, for many years. She was a community activist and was very involved in the Democratic Party. She was a community minded person involved in various volunteer organizations, including Hospice of Hancock County, Robert and Mary’s Place, the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society, along with many others. She was a member of North American Ladies Oriental Shrine, Clown Unit, Women’s Auxiliary VFW, Grange and Order of the Eastern Star. Lucy had many hobbies, including quilting, knitting and sewing. She shared 24 years of marriage with the late Charles T. Palmer, who died in 1976. Family members include four daughters, Wanda Leas of Strafford, N.H., Pamela Belknap and husband, James, of Bowdoin, Yasmin Beal and husband, Jim, of Milbridge and Yolande Justice and husband, Norman, of Gorham; 14 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters, Saundra Kennedy of Harrington and Sharon St. Clair of Lamoine and their families; her siblings, Curtis West of Boothbay, Ira G. West of Bangor, Margaret Grant of Hancock and Priscilla Kennedy of Steuben; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her second husband, Charles L. Beal in 1998. She was also predeceased by five siblings. A celebration of life will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, at Wyman United Methodist Church, Wyman Road, Milbridge, with Pastors Steve Smith and Owen Beal co-officiating. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Burial will be held after at Evergreen Cemetery, Milbridge. Immediately after the burial, a time of fellowship and reception will be held at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, 47 Main St., Milbridge.
