BEALS – Lucy Woodward Beal, 91, went to be with the Lord, Nov. 14, 2007, at a Jonesport health care facility. She was born Sept. 23, 1916, in Beals, the daughter of Herbert L. and Gertrude Beal Woodward. Mrs. Beal attended Beals schools, graduating from Beals High School in 1933. She graduated from Washington State Normal School in 1935, and the University of Maine – Machias in 1971. She was a dedicated teacher for the Beals school for 28 years and served as the principal of the Beals school for several years. She and her husband, Alfred, were dedicated supporters of the Beals basketball programs. Lucy was a loving wife and mother. She and her family spent many happy summers at Patten’s Cove on Roque Island, where she often cooked for unexpected guests such as Lawrence Poole, the number one brain surgeon in the country, and Kim Norton, the city planner of Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia. She worked side by side with Alfred seining the weirs and getting his lobster traps ready. She enjoyed watching her boys sailing play boats, lobster fishing in their small boat and helping in the herring weirs. She was instrumental in helping her husband, Alfred, with his 15 years of service as caretaker of Roque Island. The family spent many happy hours together working on the island providing for the families of the owners and their many guests. Lucy was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Alfred Beal, in 1992; sister, Louise Smith, in 1996; and brother, Willis Woodward, in 1997. She is survived by two sons, Willis A. Beal and wife, Genesta, and Robert L. Beal and his wife, Shirley, of Beals, six granddaughters, Glenda Beal and husband, Travis, of Beals, Glenace Brenton and her husband, Jeff, of Brunswick, Elizabeth Jardine and her husband, David, of Stockton, Calif., Rachel Bishop and her husband, Lewis, of Frenchboro, Alison Bowers and her husband, Todd, of North Charlston, S.C., and Lucy Stone and husband, Jason, of Fort Lewis, Wash.; four great-grandsons, Kelton Beal, Kasden Beal, Lance Bishop and Christian Stone; her bother-in-law, Raymond Smith and his wife, Barbara, of Jonesport; sister-in-law, Janis Woodward of Beals; five nieces, Jean Guptill and her husband, Lee, of Addison, Barbara Beal and her husband, Osmond, of Beals, Marina Tyler and her husband, Harold, of South Addison, Emily Alley and her husband, Maurice, of Beals, Lovina Smith and her husband, Connie, of Jonesport and Alabama; four nephews, Herbert Smith and his wife, Linda, Ralph Smith and his wife, Joyce, William Smith and his wife, Ruth, all of Jonesport, and the Rev. David Smith and his wife, Donna, of East Holden. Friends may call 2-8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at Church of Jesus Christ, The Lamb of God, Jonesport, where a funeral service will be celebrated 1 p.m. Sunday with Pastor George Woodward officiating.
