BREWER – M. Elizabeth Wood, 87, wife of 54 years to the late Joseph L. Wood, died Nov. 23, 2006, at a Brewer health care center after a brief illness. She was born June 18, 1919, in Brewer, the daughter of Henry J. and Isabelle M. (Meuller) Dougherty. Elizabeth or “Lib,” as she was known, was a lifelong resident of Brewer and was a member and communicant of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where she sang in the choir. She enjoyed working and being involved in many activities. She worked as a cook at Washington Street School and was instrumental in establishing the Lassie League softball program in Brewer. She loved local politics, working both at the polls and with the Brewer Board of Registry. Her service of 54 consecutive elections, included work on the Kennedy campaign and a political opinion for anyone who asked. Elizabeth loved playing bridge, bowling and doing ceramics with friends, four needle “waterproof” knitting and her summers that she spent at camp on Phillips Lake. She had a coveted raspberry patch to which not many were admitted. Elizabeth would always listen without being judgmental and would give good sound advice when asked. She was also an avid fan of the New England Patriots and University of Maine Women’s basketball. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister, she is survived by three children, R. Victor Wood and his wife, Betty, of Bucksport, Jacqueline Donovan and her husband, William, of Cape Cod, Mass., and Michelle Wood of Hampden; five grandchildren, Martha Ann Chapin, Sara Nixon, Kate Chesley, Kristin Briggs and Heather Wood; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Rozelle Libby of Bangor; a sister-in-law, Frances Achorn and her husband, John, of Brewer; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, in 1995, two sisters, and one brother. She will be remembered by three very special friends, Joan “Dodo” Bouchard, Margaret Cote and Constance Rossignol. Friends may visit 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 26, at Kiley Funeral Home, 69 State St., Brewer. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 27, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Brewer, with the Very Rev. Richard McLaughlin, celebrant. Burial will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bangor. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association, Maine Affiliate Inc., P.O.
