ROCKLAND – M. Evelyn Preston, 80, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, at Windward Gardens in Camden. She was born in Dexter, Feb. 5, 1923, she was the daughter of George and Sadie M. Norton Nutter. Educated in Dexter schools, Mrs. Preston was a 1940 graduate of Dexter High School. On July 7, 1950, she married Daniel W. Preston in Rockland. The couple settled in Rockland to raise their family. She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Rockland, where she served many years on the Hospitality Committee. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary No. 2499 of Rockland. She was predeceased by her husband, Daniel, June 23, 2001; and her brother, Walter Nutter. Mrs. Preston is survived by three sons and their wives, Warren and Donna Peterson of Ripley, Wayne and Pam Peterson of Palmyra, Clyde and Margaret Preston of Gardiner; three daughters and their husbands, Susanne and Andrew Sawlavich of Sidney, Karen and Samuel Godfrey of South Thomaston, Brenda and Henry Thompson of Friendship; one brother, Harold Nutter and his wife, Millie, of St. Albans; two sisters, Dorothy DuBois and her husband, Emile, of Ripley, Arlene Lewis of Palmyra; one sister-in-law, Hilda Nutter of Hartland; 13 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St., Rockland. A committal service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, at Father LeClerc Chapel, Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta.
