HAMPDEN – Madeline (Conners) Martin, 92, passed away peacefully, Jan. 24, 2005, at a Brewer healthcare facility. She was born Sept. 18, 1912, in Holden, the daughter of Edwin F. and Gertrude G. (Dowling) Conners. Madeline grew up in the first framed house in Machias, and was a graduate of Machias High School, Class of 1929, where she was the class salutatorian. She was also a graduate and the oldest living graduate of Beals Business College of Bangor. She was a bookkeeper for several local companies, and before her retirement worked for Blake, Barrows, Brown and Higgins for many years. Madeline, was a longtime resident of Hampden and attended the Hampden Highlands United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the choir for many years. She was a member of the Hampden Senior Citizens, member of the former Eastern Star Grange No. 1 of Hampden for more than 61 years, and was a member of the Maine State Grange for more than 72 years and was its oldest living member. Her other memberships included the Bangor Insurance Women’s Association and the Bangor Business Women’s Association. She is survived by her daughter, Priscilla M. Goss and her husband, Harold, of Hampden; two grandchildren, Angel Torrey of Lincoln and Bruce Torrey Jr. of Hampden; and two great-grandchildren; Hannah Witherow and Brianna Torrey. Visiting hours will be held 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, where a funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, with the Rev. Dr. Debra J. Hanson, pastor of the Hampden Highlands United Methodist Church officiating. Interment in the springtime will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Hampden.
