WASHBURN and PRESQUE ISLE – Edna Mae Crouse, 93, died Jan. 29, 2005, at Presque Isle. She was born June 20, 1911, at Stone Ridge, N.B., Canada, the daughter of Wardlow T. and Cleda L. (MacDonald) Hanson. Edna and her family moved to the United States when she was 17 months old and spent their first Thanksgiving in Houlton. She was a graduate of the Washburn High School Class of 1931 and the Aroostook State Normal School in 1933. She was also a graduate of the Aroostook State Teachers College and the University of Maine at Orono. Edna was a dedicated teacher for more than 40 years, having started her career in a one room rural school, then having taught in various school systems, such as Washburn, Crouseville, Perham, Wade, Chapman and Mapleton. She was also the principal of the Washburn Elementary School and retired in 1973. She was a past member of the Advent Christian Church, where she was a member of the choir and a Sunday school teacher and was also the organist for many years. Edna was a member of the Lidstone Memorial United Methodist Church in Washburn. She was a past president of the Aroostook County Elementary Principals Association; a member of the Maine State Teachers Association; a member of the board of directors for the Aroostook Area Agency on Aging. She served as secretary for M.R.T.A. and served as treasurer for the Aroostook R.T.A. for 16 years. She was also a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Organization, International. She is survived by her husband, Wilfred Crouse of Presque Isle; two nieces, Rilla June Durost of Presque Isle and Murial Joyce Flora of Logansport, Ind.; one nephew, Richard Brewer and his wife, Sandra, of Cambridge Ontario, Canada; several great-nieces and great-nephews, several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, Dwight Roger Vance in 1990; one brother, Albert G. Hanson; two sisters, Emmaline Blanch Haines Brewer and Ella Maude Brewer; one niece, Christine Estocado and two nephews, Charles Haines and Arthur Brewer. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Monday, at the Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, from the chapel of the Mockler Funeral Home, with the Rev. Donald Morton Sr., officiating. Spring interment will take place in the Crouseville Cemetery. Friends who wish to contribute in memory of Edna may do so through the Washburn Memorial Library.
