ORONO – Margaret E. Tomkinson, 86, died Sept. 4, 2004, at a Bangor hospital. She was born March 18, 1918, in Concord, N.H., the daughter of Herbert H. and Jennie (Ward) Eaton. Margaret “Margo” graduated from Concord High School, Concord, N.H. and the Modern School of Fashion Design, Boston, Mass. She also attended the Silver Mine Guild of Artists and joined the WAACS in World War II. Among her many awards she won the national portrait in the charcoal media. After the war she was a civil service drafstman. She married James Beatty who was killed in the war. In 1946, she married William L. Stobie and they purchased and operated Gilberts Lobster Pound and Restaurant in Pemaquid as well as owning many craft stores. She was an avid hunter with her husband and son. In 1978, she was a real estate agent in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut, returning to Maine after she retired in 1984. She is survived by one son, Robert E. Stobie of Glenburn; one daughter, Janne Stobie of Orono; and her beloved cat, Putt-Putt; her sister, Natalie Barber of De Land, Fla.; her niece, Susan Broman of De Bary, Fla, also nieces and nephews, Sister Anne Schwarz, Natalie S. Lowell, Barbara Fairfield, Philip and D. Tracy Schwarz, Joseph Stoutenburgh; and two grandchildren. Margo will be missed by special friends, Madeline Cole, Priscilla Sibley, Art and Sue Arnold and Robert Bemis, as well as her neighbors. She has left a deep hole in the hearts and lives of her children. She was their brightest light, with a wonderful sense of humor, great outlook on life; she slept with and awoke with a smile. There is no greater honor than to be her child. Interment will be in Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Augusta, Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, where she will be beside her loving husband, William L. Stobie.
