PRESQUE ISLE- Margaret L. (Stanhope) Varnum, 91, devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died March 15, 2004, at her residence. She was born May 20, 1912, in Calais, the daughter of Herbert W. and Pearl (Styles) Stanhope. She was a graduate of Calais Academy. Mrs. Varnum was an active member of many organizations including the Calais First Baptist Church, where she was a member of its Agnes Morgrage Philathea Class. She was also a member of the Milltown Extension and was a Washington County delegate from Maine to the National Home Demonstration Council in Wichita, Kan., in 1959, the Little Rock, Ark., Convention in 1960, and to Orono in 1961, where she served as chairman of music for that convention. Mrs. Varnum also belonged to the Orion Chapter of O.E.S., the Women’s’ City Club and the Benevolence Society in Calais. In 1966, she and her husband moved to Presque Isle, where she was a member of the Day Extension Group, the Garden Club, the Pierian Club, the Art Group and the Literary Group. She was also a life-long member of the Lydia Putnam Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Varnum is survived by a son, Norman K. Varnum of Presque Isle; three grandchildren, Brett Varnum and his wife, Catherine, of Presque Isle, Mark Varnum and his wife, Jackie, of Dexter, and Susan Ko and her husband, John, of Pound Ridge, N.Y.; seven great-grandchildren, Jessica and Meghann Varnum of Presque Isle, Johnathan and Daniel Varnum of Dexter, and Amanda, Lauren and Elizabeth Ko of Pound Ridge, N.Y. The youngest of ten children, Mrs. Varnum is survived by one sister, Millie (Stanhope) Winckler of Bozman, Mo.; several nieces and nephews. There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at Alexander Cemetery later in the spring. Arrangements in the care of Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, Presque Isle.
