ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla., and Calais – Margaret “Peggy” Norton, beloved wife of John Norton, passed away Oct. 31, 2007, in Zephyrhills, Fla., after a brief illness. She was born in 1934, in St. John, New Brunswick, to Margaret (Millar) and Earl Daye. She grew up in the Milltown, New Brunswick, area and taught school in several one-room school houses, including Bocabec and Lower Bayside, New Brunswick. In later years, she and her husband, John, moved their family to Calais, where they became U.S. citizens. She was a member of the staff at Calais Elementary School for several years and served on the Calais Free Library board of trustees. Peggy’s loves in life included foremost her children, grandchildren, husband and other family members. She was the oldest of nine children and was especially close to her eight brothers and sisters, to whom she was always like a mother. Peggy greatly enjoyed books, music, art and poetry. Her New Brunswick, Calais and Florida friends brought her much laughter and pleasure. She loved to laugh. Peggy will be dearly missed by her husband, John; daughter, Julie and husband, John Cashwell, of Bangor; son, Donald and fiancee, Joanne Dolan, of Calais; daughter, Betsy and husband, Tim LaCount, of Buxton; grandsons, Chet and Ryan Norton; and granddaughters, Morgan and Mollie Cashwell. She was “big sister” to, and will be greatly missed by, brothers, Robert Daye and wife, Lorraine, Daryl Daye, Edward Daye and wife, Fran, and David Daye and wife, Cheryl; sisters, Rose Ann Jackson and husband, Eugene, Donna Gough and partner, Ralph Weaver, and Betty Lou Daye; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Earl and Margaret Daye; her brother, Ernie Daye; and her daughter, Laura (Norton) Shapiro. A memorial service and celebration of Peggy’s life will be held in the early summer at Milltown United Church, New Brunswick.
