ORRINGTON – Margaret Rayma Grinnell Hanscom, wife of the late Roland L. Hanscom, died June 3, 2008, in Orrington, in the home they built for the family in 1957. She battled Myeloproliferative blood disease on her own terms for six years, and passed peacefully with her family by her side. She was born Jan. 20, 1926, in Liberty. She came to Orrington by way of Hampden and graduated from Brewer High School. Margaret was a proud homemaker and supporter of the family business and was a longtime member of Vashti Rebekah Lodge No. 35, where she was awarded the Decoration of Chivalry; VFW Maurice W. Miles Post No. 4527 Ladies Auxiliary; Enterprise Grange, P of H No. 173, where she held several offices and Christmas Club. Margaret was very proud of her volunteer efforts on behalf of St. Joseph Hospital, Baxter State Park, Sunrise Day Care and Meals For Me, both hosted at First United Methodist Church of Orrington. Margaret was as selfless as they come, always thinking of those around her and retained her wonderful sense of humor until the very end. She shared a love of the outdoors with Roland, her beloved husband of 51 years and like him, was happiest relaxing with family and friends at their Schoodic Lake camp in Lake View Plantation. She was predeceased by her parents, John A. and Aimee V. Rogerson; sisters, Clarice A. Magoon, Myra A. Dugan, Vivian A. Robbins and Paula E. Grindel; and brother, John K. Rogerson. She is survived by three sons and their families, Rodney and Judy Hanscom of Holden, Gary and Phyllis Hanscom of Brewer and their children, Christopher and his wife, Carol, of Hanover, N.H., Kate Lynd of East Waterboro and Kenneth and Cathryn Hanscom and son, Ryan, of Orono; and great-granddaughters, Alice Charlotte and Stella Margaret of Hanover, N.H.; siblings, Shirley K. Atherton of Winthrop, Richard A. Rogerson of Orono, Alice M. Reed of Holden and Nancy L. Reed of Otis and Hudson, Fla. She is also survived by aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and many lifelong friends. Friends may call 5-7 p.m. Thursday, June 5, at Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, June 6, at First United Methodist Church of Orrington, 14 Center Drive, Orrington, with the Rev. Brenda Leclerc officiating.
