STILLWATER – Marguerite L. Smith, 96, died peacefully Sept. 8, 2005, at an Orono healthcare facility. She was born June 18, 1909, in Stillwater, the daughter of Luther and Myrtle A. (Sawyer) Lewis. Marguerite graduated from the University of Maine in Orono, Class of 1930, with a degree in teaching. She was a life long member of the Stillwater Federated Church, and was a member of the Annie Matthews Society, Penobscot Chapter of Maine Retired Teachers and Pine Tree Snowmobile Club. Marguerite was an avid reader. She taught 8th grade English for the Old Town School Department for many years. She is survived by a son, Bruce Smith and wife, Patricia, of Stillwater; a sister, Barbara L. Hermes, of Essex Junction, Vt.; nieces and nephews, Mary Harmon and husband, David, of Essex Junction, Vt., Mary Paul and husband, Brian, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Cheryl Finley, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Laura Kinney Hermes of Pauls Smith, N.Y.; great-nieces and great-nephews, Kathryn and Sarah Harmon, Christopher Hermes, Caleb Paul, Valerie and Eileen Finley, and special friends Carol, Jean and Doris, and many other close friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Ned C. Smith; a brother, George Lewis; a sister, Agnes Finley; a nephew, Joel Hermes; and by many close friends. Friends are invited to visit with the family 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10 at Brookings-Smith, Labeau Chapel, 72 Main St., Orono, where funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 11 with Pastor Ronald Chaffee, officiating. Interment will be at Lawndale Cemetery, Old Town. Those who would like to remember Marguerite in a special way may make gifts to the Stillwater Federated Church, P.O. Box 386, Stillwater, ME 04489.
