AUGUSTA – Marguerite “Peg” Kearney, 90, formerly of Highland Avenue, Gardiner, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta with her family and many wonderful, caring nurses by her side. Peg was born Feb. 25, 1914, in Waterville. She was predeceased by her husband, George; son, James; her parents, Frank and Mary Guite; brothers, Emund, Francis Guite, Bill Collins; her sisters, Laura Murray and Sister Mary Fulgentia (Thena). She is survived by her two children, Paul Kearney of Gardiner and his wife, Lise, and children Mary, Jack and Pat; her daughter, Anne Chase of Farmingdale, her husband, Jerry, and their two children, Jennifer Robinson and her husband, Baxter, of Rome, Ga. and son, Derek Chase of South Portland; her sister, Teresa McNeiland; sister-in-law, Rita Collins of Bangor and many (all favorites) nieces and nephews. Peg was a graduate of John Bapst High School and Queens Hospital, currently Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Portland. Peg spent her life caring for other people. She dropped out of high school for a year to care for her sick mother. She worked as an R.N. in the Bangor area and the University of Maine in Orono. She married George Kearney and lived in Oakfield, Island Falls and Houlton. She raised her children, and then returned to work again as a nurse at the Madigan Hospital in Houlton where she spent the majority of her nursing career. When she retired from nursing she continued to care for anyone needing help. Even at the age of 90, she continued to offer advice and “work” alongside the nurses at the Maine Veterans Home. She was generous, kind, caring and an inspiration to everyone who came into her life. Her faith and love of God has always sustained her. Peg loved to knit, crochet, dance with her brother-in-law, Bob Murray, sing and play cards with friends and family. Peg was a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Augusta and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Gardiner. She was formerly a member of the Houlton Council of Catholic Woman, a Minister of Praise at St. Mary’s in Augusta and a greeter at St. Mary’s in Bangor. She was also a member of the Madigan and Mercy Alumni. Peg’s family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the wonderful care and compassion the nursing and support staff showed to Peg and her family. Visiting hours will be held 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, at Amesbury, White and Harmon Funeral Home, 39 Washington Avenue, Gardiner. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Western Avenue in Augusta. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, Houlton, in the spring. Those who desire may make donations to St. Mary’s Catholic School in Augusta or donate to the Maine Veterans Home Activities Fund.
