BAR HARBOR – Marilyne “Marnie” Akerley passed away April 1, 2006, at a Bangor hospital after a courageous battle with emphysema. She was born Oct. 3, 1946, in Bar Harbor, the daughter of Herman “Hank” and Marilyne Marino. Marnie graduated from Bar Harbor High School and worked at several businesses in Bar Harbor, including J.H. Butterfield, The Bar Harbor Club, Bernard Staples, Esq., and for the past 17 years in the main office at MDI High School. She was a past member of the board of directors of the MDI YMCA and for many years was very active in age group swimming and diving as a parent and an official. She enjoyed knitting and looked forward to spring and summer when she could get out and take care of her flowers and enjoy afternoons of the porch. Canoeing, fishing and trips to Baxter State Park, especially Kidney Pond where she could relax and enjoy the solitude, were her favorites. Marnie’s true love was her family. She was a wonderful wife and a terrific mother to Bill, Keith and Jess. She also seemed like a second mom for many MDI students. Survivors include her mother of Bar Harbor; husband, Duffy Akerley; son, Bill Nickels and fiance, Julaine Frolov and daughter Natalia Frolov-Nickels of Corvallis, Ore.; son, Keith Nickels and wife, Christa and son, Anthony of Brewer; daughter, Jessica Nickels of Bar Harbor; sister, Joyce King and husband, Gordon, of Trenton; and sister, Ellen Marino of Whitehouse Station, N.J. At Marnie’s request services will be private. Those who wish may send donations in Marnie’s memory to the MDI YMCA, 21 Park St., Bar Harbor, ME 04609, the Maine Swimming and Diving Fund at the University of Maine Foundation, Two Alumni Place, Orono, ME 04469-5792, or to a charity of their choice. Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, 48 Eden St., Bar Harbor.
