PRESQUE ISLE – Marion E. Akeley, 99, wife of the late Carroll W. Akeley, died April 17, 2004, at a Mars Hill healthcare facility. She was born Dec. 14, 1904, in Clyde River, Prince Edward Island, Canada, the daughter of George and Sadie (Hertz) Gillespie. Marion was a long time and a founding member of the Bethany Baptist Church in Presque Isle. She had been nick named “Miss Nimble Fingers” because of her talent for knitting. She shared this gift in the form of mittens for many, many children who would not have had any if it had not been for her caring heart. Surviving her are a son, Don Akeley of Presque Isle; four grandchildren, William Akeley, David Akeley, Margo Dyer and Rebecca Jurovich; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers and a sister, Frank, Les and John Gillespie and Eleanor Libby. Relatives and friends may call 7-9 p.m. Monday at the Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. James Ackerson officiating. Interment will be in the Fairmount Cemetery in Presque Isle.
