PRESQUE ISLE – Marion Wheeler (Dewitt) Fillmore, 99, died Sept. 12, 2006, at the home of her daughter, Addie Louise Hoyt in Danielson, Conn. Marion was born June 14, 1907, in Easton, the eldest daughter of the late Nettie Edna (Wheeler) Dewitt and Fred Parker Dewitt. She graduated from Presque Isle High School, Class of 1924. She attended a six-week course at Aroostook State Normal School and received a “special teachers’ certificate.” Her first teaching position was in Caswell that fall. In 1942 Marion started work at the Presque Isle Post Office. In 1947 she returned to teaching; she graduated from Aroostook State Teachers College in 1954. She retired from teaching in 1974. Marion also taught piano and organ, and directed the bell choir at the Grant Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was a member. She was a member of the Maine Teachers Association. She is survived by her sons, Dewitt C. Fillmore and his wife, Anita, of Greensboro, N.C., Jerre N. Fillmore and his wife, Elizabeth, of Danielson, Conn.; a daughter, Addie Louise Hoyt of Danielson, Conn.; two sisters, Hazel Schofield and Thelma Graves, both of Framingham, Mass.; 13 grandchildren, Kerry Jo Sparks of Monticello, Fla., Kent Fillmore of Leroy, Mich., Jan Burbage of West Columbia, S.C., Kim Cornish of Topsham, Jan Wilmer of Charlottesville, Va., Ellen Jenkins of Taney, Ala., Dr. P. Arthur Hoyt Jr. of Yorktown, Va., Mark Hoyt of Brookyln, Conn., Paul Hoyt of Vernon, Conn., Nancy Gaudreau of Danielson, Conn., Keith Hoyt of Brooklyn, Conn., Jerre D. Fillmore and Mark G. Fillmore, both of Danielson, Conn.; 34 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter L. Fillmore; a son, Walter F. Fillmore; two sisters, Edna Mae Rowe and Ada Louise Phipps; a brother, Frank Clifford DeWitt; a daughter-in-law, Dawn (Dozier) Landers; and son-in-law, Philip A. Hoyt. Family and friends are invited to greet the family 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Grant Memorial United Methodist Church, Presque Isle, where a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. with the Rev. David Williams officiating. Interment will be at Fairmount Cemetery. Marion enjoyed the fellowship of dining with friends.
