BANGOR – Marjorie (Merrill) Melvin, 82, died peacefully Oct. 2, 2006, at a Bangor health care facility after a long illness. She was born Jan. 9, 1924, in Waterville, the daughter of Neal Clifford and Winifred (Nealley) Merrill. She graduated from Waterville High School in 1941, attended Gorham State Teacher’s College, and graduated from Colby College in 1945. She worked during and after college at the Waterville Public Library. Marjorie was a 45-year member of the Hammond Street Congregational Church, Bangor. She was a 56-year member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and a 62-year member of Tri-Delta Sorority. Prior to the birth of her children, she worked at the Bangor Public Library, and after her children had left home; she was employed for eight years at the Community Health and Counseling Center, Bangor. She married Ernest “Tinker” Stephen Melvin Jan. 26, 1946, in Waterville. They were happily married for more than 60 years, living most of the time in Bangor. In addition to her husband, Ernest, she leaves two children, Scott M. Melvin of Sterling, Mass., and Suanne (Melvin) Johnson and her husband, David S., of Buxton; two grandchildren, Kristin N. Johnson and Kelly E. Johnson; 21 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Earle K. Merrill; and by her uncle, Kenneth C. Nealley. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 6, at the Hammond Street Congregational Church, 28 High St., Bangor, with the Rev. Dr. Mark Allen Doty, pastor, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments after the services at the Hammond Street Congregational Church Reception Hall. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Winterport. Gifts in her memory may be sent to the Hammond Street Congregational Church, Bangor.
