DELRAY BEACH, Fla. and SOUTHWEST HARBOR – Martha Jane Potter ‘Marty’ Phillips died peacefully in the arms of her family at “Pine Ledge,” Southwest Harbor, Friday morning, July 16, 2004. A graduate of Sarah Lawrence College, Marty served our country in the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots, (WASP), ferrying aircraft between bases in the U.S. during World War II. She ran the Manhattan Office of Steuben Glass and chaired the Community Services Society in New York City. She was born Dec. 8, 1911, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Charlotte Rust and Wilson Potter. As matriarch to the Porter clan, her life has been an inspiration to us all. She is survived by her daughter, Jane Rust Munson Harrison; and her son-in-law, J.B. Harrison. She was the loving “grandmommers” of Timothy Laurel Harrison and Chauncey Rachael Sherwood Harrison; and the devoted sister of the late John Rust “Brue” Potter; beloved aunt of John Rust Potter Jr., Martin Hopkins Potter, Jessie Potter Kingston and Amy Potter Hancock. Marty was the loved wife of the late Harry Hungerford Spooner Phillips Jr.; and ex-wife of the late Charles Sherwood Munson Jr. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 24, at “Pine Ledge,” 37 Herrick Road, Southwest Harbor. An additional memorial service will be held in Delray Beach, Fla., at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the charity of your choice in Marty’s name.
