DENNYSVILLE – Mary E. Mahar, 94, died Tuesday, April 3, 2007, at a Machias hospital after a brief illness. She was born June 16, 1912, in Dennysville, the daughter of the late Ethel (Motz) and Joseph McGinnis Mary was educated in Dennysville schools and graduated from Dennysville High School, Class of 1928. She attended Washington State Normal School, now the University of Maine at Machias; and graduated in the Class of 1932, with a life certificate for teaching. She taught grades first through fourth in Dennysville Primary School for 28 years and finished her career teaching grades third and fourth at Edmunds Consolidated School for 11 years prior to retirement in 1972. Mary, who joined the Dennysville-Edmunds Congregational Church in 1928, was the oldest continuing member, 79 years, of that body and continued to support church activities until the present. She proudly served as treasurer of the town of Dennysville for more than 40 years. She was also active in the Dennys River Leisure Club and served as its secretary for many years. She was an avid Red Sox fan, but sometimes said, “They can’t play marbles!” For the first 20 years of her retirement, she enjoyed driving around the area with her friends and relatives, going shopping, attending senior citizens meetings, auctions and yard sales. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and State Representative Howard McFadden; grandson and wife, Chuck and Gail McFadden; great-grandchildren, Matt and Mallorie Patterson, all of Dennysville; great-grandson, Howie McFadden of Billings, Mont.; great-granddaughter, Samantha McFadden of Columbia, Md.; special niece and husband, Anna and Albert Suddy of Veazie; dear caregivers, Orene Clark of Perry, Ginny Burke of Eastport, and Paul McFadden of Edmunds; special friends, Roy and Jennie Kilby and Eileen Dougherty, all of Edmunds; sisters-in-law and their families, Vivian (Mahar) Trott of Portland, Conn. and Muriel (Mahar) Juska of Eatontown, N.J.; several nieces and nephews; and her cat, Friend. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Albert Mahar; her sister, Ruby (McGinnis) Sylvia; and several brothers and sisters-in-law. Viewing will be held 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 6, at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 6 Cooper St., Machias. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, April 7, at Dennysville-Edmunds Congregational Church with the Rev. Ron Windhorst and the Rev. Colin Windhorst officiating. Interment will be at Dennysville Cemetery. Immediately after, there will be a reception in the New Parish Hall.
