SOUTH PORTLAND – Mary Irene Nelson, 96, formerly of Broadway, South Portland, died Sept. 29, 2006, with her loving family at her side, at a Portland nursing home. She was born Dec. 24, 1909, in Portland, a daughter of Mark J. and Anna B. (Welch) Flaherty. She was a graduate of Portland High School, Class of 1927. Mary was a longtime resident of South Portland. Mary worked as a receptionist for Cape Realty for 20 years. She was a communicant of Holy Cross Church. Sunday afternoon, was a gala time for card games and family activities. She also enjoyed horse racing and was an avid Red Sox fan. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Niles Nelson Jr. in 1991. Surviving are her daughter, Dorothy Bergman of Carter Lake, Iowa; her son, Niles Nelson III and his wife, Iona, of Bangor; three sisters, Adelaide Luttrell and Miss Agnes Flaherty, both of South Portland and Mrs. Katherine Massell and her husband, Emmanuel, of Richmond Hills, N.Y.; a brother, Edward P. Flaherty and his wife, Melva, of Portland; three brother-in-laws, Warren Nelson and his wife, Vera, of Westbrook, Richard Nelson of South Portland and Alexander Vankevich of Portland; three sisters-in-law, Helen Flaherty of Wells, Rowena Nelson of Portland and Leah Nelson of Scarborough; her grandchildren, Debbie Lassek of Columbus, New Brunswick, Kenneth Lassek of Omaha, New Brunswick, Michael Bergman of Carter Lake, Iowa, Matthew Nelson of Gorham, Joseph Nelson of Bangor and Shannon LaPointe of Brewer; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held 4-7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2, at the Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, at Holy Cross Church, corner of Broadway and Cottage Road, South Portland. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland. The family extends a special thank you to the staff of St. Joseph’s Manor for the care they had given to Mary in the past years.
