NORFOLK, Va. – Ray Freemont Rollins, 85, passed away Sunday, July 9, 2006, at Lake Taylor Transi-tional Care Hospital. Ray was born Feb. 19, 1921, in Wytopitlock, to Frank and Harriet Hewey Rollins, the youngest of six children. He received his education initially in the public school system of Maine. He continued his education at the University of Maine, Columbia University, Duke University and Harvard University. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and served aboard LST318. He later attended midshipmen school at Columbia University, where he received his commission. He served in intelligence for the duration of the war. Afterwards, he stayed on inactive duty in the reserves, with the exception of recall during the Korean War. Ray retired as lieutenant commander in 1964. His employment with the Norfolk public school system began in 1954, first as a teacher, then as in positions of assistant principal and principal. He retired in 1983. He was a life member of the National Education Association, Virginia Education Association and Military Officers Association of America, as well as a member of several professional organizations. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Crowder Rollins; son, Ronald Ray Rollins and wife, Diana, of Roswell, Ga.; grandchildren, Christopher Ray Rollins of Chesapeake, Va., Eric Troy Rollins of Virginia Beach, Va., Lisa Nicole Rollins of Virginia Beach, Va., and Florence Nicole Rollins of Roswell, Ga.; stepchildren, Mrs. William Mann of Florida, Mrs. Tom Courson of Colorado, Wesley Crowder of Virginia and Mrs. Craig Norman of Virginia; along with a host of great-grand-children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his former wives, Margaret Jones Rollins and Ethel Pittenger Rollins; his parents and five brothers. The family extends a special thanks to the staff of Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital for their kindness and devoted care of Ray and for the many courtesies extended to them. To know Ray was to love him. He will be missed. A memorial service was held 2 p.m. Thursday, July 13, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 224 South Military Highway, Norfolk, Va.
