HOULTON – Mary Louise Mooers, 80, passed away March 23, 2006, at Houlton Regional Hospital after a brief illness. She was born Oct. 11, 1925, at home during a blizzard on Benn Hill in Hodgdon. She was the 10th of 11 children of E. Shirley and Mary Jordan Benn. Mary Lou graduated from Hodgdon High School and Becker Junior College in Worcester, Mass. On June 30, 1945, she was married to John R. Mooers, her husband of nearly 60 years. In addition to being a devoted mother and wife, Mary Lou was an invaluable partner to the couple’s farming, trucking and real estate businesses. Through her life she was active in Sunday school teaching and music programs. Mary Lou was a Boy Scout’s den mother and enjoyed her flower gardens, birds, music, puzzles, reading and daily picnics. She was a woman of strong religious faith. In addition to the Episcopal Church, her affiliation with Christian Science and her childhood in the Methodist Church had a profound influence on her always positive outlook. Her inner peace came from her belief that everything is in God’s hands in His perfect timing. Mary Lou is survived by four sons, Stephen and Jennifer of Bangor, Jonathan and Susan of Boxford, Mass., Brian and Kathleen of Portland, Ore. and Andrew and Lisa of Houlton. She was blessed with 15 grandchildren, Joshua, Stephanie, Justin, Meredith, Andrew, Alexandra, Houston, Marissa, Harrison, Elizabeth, Amanda, Lindsay, Alexander, Keegan, Elliot; and three great-grandchildren, Kendall, Brady and Mayzie. She also leaves behind her loving younger sister, Helen and her husband, Carl Hagan; and sisters-in-law, Molly Mooers and Rita Benn; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, John, and nine brothers and sisters. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, March 26, at the Church of Good Shepherd, where family and friends will be able to call 1 p.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, Mary Lou requested a memorial be made to the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. Arrangements by Bowers Funeral Home, 10 Water St., Houlton.
