SOUTH BREWER – Maud Lillian Swett, 106, wife of the late Hiram Swett, daughter of Matthew and Catherine (McPhee) Street, died Dec. 29, 2005, at a Brewer healthcare facility. She was the oldest of 11 children, born Jan. 26, 1899, in South Brewer and has lived three centuries. Maud went to work at age 14, at Eastern Manufacturing Co. (1913-1961). She played on the Eastern Ladies Basketball team in 1917. Maud resided at her home 49 Pendleton St., Brewer, 74 years, with the aid and kindness of her daughter, Lorraine and son-in-law, Grant Coulter, until she broke her hip in 1997. She took great pride in her home and was an immaculate housekeeper. Maud will also be remembered for her handmade quilts, molasses cookies and applesauce cake. She lived through the Depression and experienced the change from gas lights to the world of electricity and the world of electronics; transportation from horse and buggy to trolleys, automobiles, trains and airplanes and all the industrial changes to our modern living. Maud had a love for poetry and memorized many poems and still could recite many nursery rhymes and poems and her favorite poem was the “Children’s Hour” by Longfellow. She was a member of the First Methodist Church of Brewer. Maude is survived by her loving daughter, Lorraine; and son-in-law, Grant Coulter of Orrington; cherished grandchildren, David and Pam Coulter of Jacksonville, Fla., Ellen McClure of Kittery, Sally Morrill of Jacksonville, Fla.; six great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, her sister, Emma Spox, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, brothers, William and Fred Street; and sisters, Annie Ellingwood and Winona Doucette. The family would like to thank Brewer Rehab and Living Center and staff for all their kindness and care. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 1-2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, at Brookings-Smith Clark-Piper Chapel, with funeral services to be held at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Dr. George Curtis III, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Brewer, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Brookings-Smith Reception Rooms, 55 South Main Street, Brewer, after the service. Spring interment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery, Orrington.
