DEER ISLE – Maurice “Cookie” E. Barbour, 80, passed away May 14, 2007, after a brief illness. He was born Nov. 30, 1926, in Chelsea, Mass., the son of the late Albert R. and Rose (Haskell) Barbour. He attended Deer Isle schools. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946 during World War II. Maurice married Ardelle Bray in 1950. He worked for Barter Lumber Co., for 40 years until his retirement. Maurice was a member of the American Legion Post No. 102 for more than 50 years. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 122 for 45 years. Maurice enjoyed gardening and playing cribbage. He will also be remembered for being an avid Boston Red Sox fan and enjoyed watching football and basketball. He is survived by his three daughters, Rose Mann and husband, Lyman, of Surry, Arlene Gaudy and husband, John, of Wilmington, N.C., and Susan Dunham and husband, Kevin, of Townsend, Mass.; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Maurice was predeceased by his beloved wife of 46 years, Ardelle; a daughter, Beverly A. Beal; and a brother, Charles E. Barbour. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, at the Church of Jesus Christ Restoration Branch, Sunset.
