BANGOR and HAMPDEN Maurice “Max” J. Barone died at his home on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, after a long illness. Max served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He enjoyed working with children and was the winning coach of many little league teams. He was employed by General Electric for many years. Max was an avid golfer and sports fan who rarely missed a sunny day at the Hampden Country Club with close friends and fellow golfers, Don Venenziano, Lew Gravelle and Gary Tibbetts. The last few years he was a substitute teacher at Hampden Academy and could often be found in the crowd of fans cheering on the girl’s basketball team. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Flood Barone; three children, daughters, Nancy B. Williams of Austin, Texas, and Karen J. Barone and her husband, Noah C. Shaw, of Cambridge, Mass.; and son, Frank W. Barone of Cambridge, Mass.; sister, Lillian McGarahan of Laguna Hills, Calif.; and nephew, Peter McGarahan of Yorba Linda, Calif.; three grandchildren, Heather Hults of Albertson, N.Y., Crystal Hults of PortWashington, N.Y., and Kasey Noga of Austin, Texas; and one great-grandchild, Kayla Cerda of PortWashington, N.Y. He is also survived by an extended family of children, Carole Brocato, Faye Robinson, Roger Flood, Ann Gravelle, Dana Flood, Sherie Maxwell; and their 12 grandchildren, Brenda (Brocato) Hornbrook, Sharon (Brocato) Krug, James Brocato, Janine (Brocato) Hewey, Blaine Greenlaw, Shawn Welock, James Flood, Sarah Flood, Renee Gravelle, Jared Gravelle, Beverly Flood and Tasha Flood. Special thanks to his Doctors Garrett and Verosloff and the nurses on the 6th floor at EMMC who provided him with wonderful care. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Avenue, Hampden, where a funeral service will be held 4 p.m. Saturday with the Rev.
