VAN BUREN – Maurice Saucier, 70, died July 19, 2006, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Jan. 16, 1936, in Eagle Lake, the son of Edmond and Edwidge (Pelletier) Saucier Sr. He attended local schools and was a graduate of Fort Kent Community High School. Maurice was employed in the grocery business all of his life, beginning at age 15, with his father in Eagle Lake, where the family business originated. In 1955, the family business moved to Madawaska and operated there until 1959, when Edmond Sr. and his wife permanently relocated to Van Buren. There they, along with their sons, Edmond Jr. and Maurice, catered to the grocery needs of their community. In Van Buren, the “Saucier” name became a fixture in the grocery business that still operates to this day, a tradition of which Maurice was most proud. He continued to work on a part-time basis, even as his daughter and son-in-law took over the daily operations last year. Maurice was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1635 and the Fourth Degree Assembly of Van Buren. For many years he was very active in his community as a member of the Chamber of Commerce, a trustee of the Van Buren Light and Power District and also served several terms as a director on the SAD No. 24 school board. He was a former member of the Van Buren Lions Club and served with the National Guard for 18 years. Maurice was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, four-wheeling and the family camp at Long Lake. Aside from his grocery business, Maurice was most proud and dedicated to his family. Surviving him are his loving wife of 51 years, Joyce (Sutherland) Saucier of Van Buren; his daughters and their husbands, Lisa Vaillancourt and her husband, Glen, of Scarborough, Donna Labbe and her husband, Roger, of Livermore Falls, Dedra Lizotte and her husband, Jim, of Van Buren; his grandchildren, Matthew Labbe, Riley Lizotte and Haley Lizotte; his sister, Earline Grandmaison and her husband, Gilman, of Van Buren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Edmond Saucier Jr. Relatives and friends may call 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. Monday until time of service at the Ouellette-Thibault Funeral Home, 118 High St., Van Buren. A funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday at the St. Bruno-St. Remi Catholic Church. Interment will be at the Grande Riviere Cemetery.
