CAMDEN – Maurice W. Smith, 93, formerly of Rockland, died at his granddaughter’s home, Sunday, Sept. 18, 2005, after a long illness. Born June 13, 1912, at Swans Island, he was a son of George and Nellie Lunt Smith. After moving to Rockland at an early age he was educated in local schools. During the early years of his career, he apprenticed aboard coastal steam ships and ultimately earned a fireman and oil steam operators license. He married Harriett Scott, Nov. 18, 1939, in Rockland. For many years, he lobstered out of Spruce Head, Rockland & off Dix Island which he owned. He continued fishing until he was 74. He enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, and often visited Florida and Alaska. Recounting stories of old times, he often said that when he and his wife were first married, they rented a whole house in Thomaston for $5.00/month and had a hard time paying that. He was a member of the Rockland Lodge of Elks, No. 1008. Mr. Smith was predeceased by his wife in 1998. He is survived by one daughter, Judith Erskine and her husband, Glendon, of Camden; a brother, Wendell Smith of Lincolnville; granddaughter, Debbie Murgita and her husband, Brian; a grandson, Scott Erskine and his wife, Cathy; three great-grandchildren, Sierra Pettee, Calen Erskine, Noah Erskine, as well as several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be private with interment at Ocean View Cemetery, South Thomaston. Arrangements are with Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St., Rockland.
