EXETER – Mavis R. Hughes, 83, died March 28, 2005, at a Dexter healthcare facility. She was born Oct. 22, 1921, at Houlton, the daughter of Herman and Violet (Petchey) Small. She graduated from Exeter High School and attended Zion Bible Institute in East Providence, R.I. Mavis taught school in Dexter, Exeter, Garland and the Charleston Christian Academy. She was an excellent seamstress, Sunday School and Bible teacher and taught many classes at several area churches. She was a member of the Exeter Full Gospel Church and will be sadly missed by her family. Mavis is survived by her husband, Harold Hughes of Exeter; two daughters and their husbands, the Rev. Merlene Spurrell and the Rev. David Spurrell of Verona, Ontario; the Rev. Meredith Giles and the Rev. Stephen Giles of Albany, N.Y.; a daughter-in-law, Linda Bowden of Maryland; four stepchildren, Stephen Hughes of Carmel, Anthony Hughes of Skowhegan, Elois Gagliardo of Newport and Susan Bruce of Maryland; 11 grandchildren; eight great- grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband, Merle Fickett in 1960; her second husband, Herbert Bragg in 1986; and a son, the Rev. Paul Fickett in 1989. Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 31, at the Exeter Full Gospel Church, Exeter, where a celebration of Mavis’s life will be held 11 a.m. Friday with her family and the Rev. Chris Faloon officiating. Spring burial will be in the Morse’s Corner Cemetery, Corinna. Memorial donations may be made to the Exeter Full Gospel Church, P.O. Box 24, Exeter, ME 04435.
