BANGOR – Maxine Anderson Dane, 93, died May 26, 2004, at a healthcare facility in Bangor. She was born in Denver, Colo., the daughter of Enoch and Esther Anderson. Maxine attended Colorado Women’s College, graduated from Augustana College with a B.A. degree, received a bachelor of music degree from The Denver College of Music, an M.A. in Music from Columbia Teachers’ College and did doctoral work in music at Columbia University. While in New York, Mrs. Dane was a piano accompanist to Martha Graham’s modern music group. She taught music at Oberlin College, where she met her husband, Nathan Dane II, who was also teaching at Oberlin. Following World War II, they moved to Brunswick, where she taught English at Brunswick High School for 17 years. Mrs. Dane was an avid reader who audited numerous classes at Bowdoin College after her retirement. She was a loyal Red Sox and Patriots fan. Maxine is survived by three children, Nathan Dane III and his wife, Martha, of Little Deer Isle, Caroline Dane and her partner, Prof. Thomas Duchesneau, of Orono, and Prof. Joseph Dane of Harpswell; and two grandsons, Prof. Matthew Dane and his wife, Christina Jennings, of Norman, Okla., and Benjamin Dane of New York City. She is also survived by one brother, Robert Anderson and his wife, Shirley, of Kalispell, Mont.; and three sisters, Dorothy Hunt of Denver, Colo., Lillian Barrows of Grand Junction, Colo., and Lois (Peggy) McEvoy of Findlay, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Nathan; and one sister, Janice Mason. The family wishes to express appreciation to the staff of Bangor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where Mrs. Dane spent her last two years, and to Dr. Henry Atkins and his staff. Per her wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial services.
