GOULDSBORO – Harold W. Kelley, Jr., 66, lost his battle with cancer and passed away peacefully June 7, 2004, at home with his family by his side. He was born Feb. 18, 1938, in Gouldsboro, the son of Harold W. and Dorothy (Ryder) Kelley. Harold was a carpenter all his life. He built many of the fine homes in the surrounding area. He was involved in many outside activities, including the Boy Scouts of America, an organization in which he participated in for more than 23 years, starting as Assistant Scout Master, then Scout Master. Harold organized the Explorer Post, a co-ed program for teenagers. This scouting activity was through Post 101 in Winter Harbor. Harold was also a deputy for Hancock County Sheriff, Merrit Fitch, and was a member of the Police Reserves for the Ellsworth Police Department. He was the Safety Coordinator for the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, teaching ATV and Snowmobile Safety. Harold was a member of David Hooper Lodge No. A.F. & A.M. Harold was an active member of The Ancient Ones “Living History Group”. “Hawkeye” was loved by all. He enjoyed his family first and foremost. He always enjoyed working with children. Harold said if he could keep even one child from going astray it made it all worthwhile. He loved life and always enjoyed meeting new people. Harold is survived by his wife of 47 years, Fern L. (Atwater) Kelley of Gouldsboro; three children, Stephen Kelley and his wife, Alice, of Ellsworth, Delores Kelley and her life partner, Robert Palmer, of Sangerville, and Mark Kelley and his partner, Shannon Pert, of Gouldsboro; a sister, Marion Bunker and her husband, Alden Sr., of Franklin; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two nephews, Alden Bunker Jr. and Michael Bunker. He was predeceased by his parents. Graveside funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, June 11, at the Simpson Cemetery in Sullivan, with the Rev. William Renwick officiating. The family would like to invite friends and family to join them at a memorial reception at the David Hooper Lodge (located on Rt. 200) in Sullivan, immediately following the services at the cemetery.
