HAMPDEN – Maynard G. Ballard, 72, husband of Marilyn (Clark) Ballard, passed away June 25, 2007, surrounded by his family at a Bangor hospital. He was born June 11, 1935, in Lowell, the son of Eva Ballard. Maynard made his home in Hampden for the past 44 years, where he and Marilyn raised their family. He retired from the Maine Army National Guard as a mechanical technician. After his retirement from the National Guard he worked as a deputy sheriff with the Penobscot County Sheriff Department in the security and transport division. After retiring from the sheriff’s department, he went on to work for M.V.M Security Co., as a security officer at the Bangor Federal Building, a job he held at the time of his death. Maynard was a member and past master of Rising Virtue Masonic Lodge No. 10 AF & AM of Bangor and Anah Temple Shrine of Bangor. In the Shrine, he was a member of the mini bike unit for 10 years and for the last 23 years he was a member of the clown unit. He deeply enjoyed being “Bummer” the clown, a character that brought much enjoyment to children and adults alike, throughout his years in the Anah Temple Clown Unit. Maynard was a large and gentle man with enormous generosity. His kindness and generosity had no limits. Maynard’s children, grandchildren, many family and friends, and even strangers were the recipients of his generosity throughout his lifetime. He will be remembered as a hard working and loving son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Maynard is survived by his wife of 48 years, Marilyn; three daughters, Cheryl Woodward and her husband, Matthew and their sons, Caleb and Josh, Teresa Pipes and her husband, Ray and their sons, Ray and Scott, her ex-husband, Walter Beck and their children, Jeff and Jamie Beck, and daughter, Kristina Ballard; brothers, Douglas Lawrence and Fredrick “Smokey” Lawrence; sisters, Shirley Neal, Norma Robertson, and Melanie Emerson, nieces; nephews, cousins and numerous other family and friends. He was especially close to his nephews, Paul and Steve Lawrence. Maynard was predeceased by his mother, Eva; and brothers, Donald and Joseph Lawrence. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, where the officers and members of Rising Virtue Lodge No. 10 in conjunction with the Anah Temple Shrine Clown Unit will conduct a Masonic memorial service 7 p.m. Thursday. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Tracy A. Reeves, pastor of the North Brewer-Eddington United Methodist Church, officiating.
