AMITY – Merlin D. Putnam, 73, died Jan. 31, 2008, surrounded by his family and friends. He was born June 1, 1934, in Houlton, the son of Dean B. and Margaret E. (Welton) Putnam. In 1962, Merlin married Donna Farrar, his loving wife of 46 years. They made their home in Amity, where Merlin was known for his kindness, generosity and willingness to help others. He truly served others and was always available for someone in need. He also was known for his propensity for playing practical jokes and for his musical talent. He worked for many years as a mechanic, lumberman and woodworker, and served proudly in the U.S. Army. Merlin was a member of Cary Baptist Church, where he enjoyed being an usher and playing music with Charles. He loved Jesus and there never went a night without praying. Merlin is survived by his loving wife, Donna (Farrar) Putnam; his daughter, Susan R. Langley and her husband, Jason, all of Amity; one brother, Clark Putnam of Cary; three sisters, Avis Newcomb and her husband, Bud, of Northport, Linda Stevens and her husband, David, of Ludlow, and Carol Bartlett and her late husband, Virgil, of Orient; several special friends, Larry Haggerty and his wife, Carol, of Houlton, Gene McGuire and his wife, Lana, of Linneus, Ralph Bickford and his wife, Betty, of Amity; several special nieces and nephews; and his special bugger, Sara Starbuck. He was predeceased by his parents; and two brothers, Weldon and Galen Putnam. A celebration of Merlin’s life will be held noon Sunday at Cary Baptist Church with a time of fellowship after.
