DOVER-FOXCROFT – Merna S. Doore, 96, wife of the late Harland Doore, died Jan. 14, 2008, at a local nursing home. She was born Jan. 24, 1911, in Garland, the daughter of Howard and Mary (Adams) Sawyer. She graduated from Garland public schools and then received her Bachelor of Science degree in home economics at Farmington State Normal School. She was active in 4-H and Piscataquis Extension, both leading and teaching. She married Harland Emerson Doore, June 20, 1936. Merna taught school in Garland for a few years and moved to Dover-Foxcroft in 1954. After raising her family, she began working at Mayo Regional Hospital in 1964 as a certified nurse’s aide and continued for 19 years. Upon retiring she began volunteering at the hospital, logging more than 11,000 hours as a dedicated volunteer and work-ing until one week of her pass-ing. Her hands were always busy with needlework and quilting, much of which she donated to the hospital auxiliary. She was a faithful member of Dover-Foxcroft Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for nearly 43 years, serving as secretary, teacher and in various other positions. She is survived by five children, Merle Emerson Doore of Garland, Rosa-Lee Delphine Doore Dow and her husband, Robert, of East Dover, Cyrus Hall Doore III and his wife, Gail, of Dover-Foxcroft, Mary Lou Doore Davis and her husband, Wade, of Parkman and Freeman Alan Doore and his wife, Kathy, of Barnard; 14 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Harland; her son, Earle Marvin Doore; her siblings, Elvis Hall, Wilma Sawyer, Ervin Sawyer and Leta Titcomb; and a grandson, Daniel Boye Doore. Friends are invited to call 2-4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, at Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at Dover-Foxcroft Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with Branch President Stephen E. Page officiating. Spring burial will be in the family lot at Evergreen Cemetery, Garland.
