STILLWATER and FORT MYERS, Fla. – Merrill “Red” Bartlett, 74, died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, in Fort Myers, Fla., after a brief battle with cancer. He was born Oct. 1, 1929, in Belgrade Lakes, the son of G. Kenneth and Kathlyn Day Bartlett. He is survived by his loving wife, Kit; daughter, Lynn Bartlett and Rob Latham of Bethlehem, Conn.; son, Ken Bartlett and his wife, Katie, and grandchildren, K.C. and Dana, of Smithfield, Va.; and many friends. Merrill was a 1948 graduate of Kents Hill School and a graduate of the University of Maine in Orono, where he received a BA in 1952 and an MBA in 1958. He was a doctoral candidate at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., as a Fellow in the 1960 Stanford Sloan Program. A Korean War veteran, he retired in 1993 from the University of Maine where he had a long and distinguished career of 35 years as an educator and administrator in the College of Business. He was a member of the Mount Vernon Chapter of The Masons. After retirement, Red enjoyed summers in Orono golfing at the Penobscot Valley Country Club, where he was a long-standing member. He was also an active golfer in the Easter Maine Seniors’ Golf Association. He enjoyed fishing with his friends and gardening at home. He and Kit spent winters in their Fort Myers home, where they belonged to Estero Country Club, enjoying golf, friends, and visits from family.
