SHERMAN – Merton Lane, 93, died Feb. 6, 2004, at Lincoln. He was born Oct. 19, 1910, in Sherman, the son of Edwin and Josie (Dolley) Lane. Mert had worked during the depression for Oliver Grant for room and board, also on the Perrin Farms, Sleeper Farms and for Harold Lane in the woods. He was retired from the Maine Forest Service where he had been an observer in a 60-foot tower at Lawlor Ridge and Peekaboo Mountain. Merton was a 55-year member of the Molunkus Lodge No. 165 AF&AM of Sherman, and was a member of the Washburn Memorial Church. He is survived by one sister, Virginia Welch of Sherman; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Mazie Lane and Rita Morrow; and two brothers, Jim and Ralph Lane. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Washburn Memorial Church, Sherman, with Masonic services being held at 7 p.m., also from 5-6 p.m. Tuesday with funeral services being held at 6 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Rodger Goode officiating. Spring interment will be in the Sherman Mills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations in Mert’s memory to the Washburn Memorial Church.
