MOUNT DESERT – Mervyn E. Manring, 90, died Aug. 19, 2007, with his family at his side, in Mount Desert. He was born June 23, 1917, in Mount Desert, the youngest son of Lewis and Clora (Tracy) Manring. Mervyn loved history. He enjoyed talking about old ships and trains and had many books and videos that he read and watched to occupy his time. He loved gardening. Mervyn shared stories about his family and its genealogy. As a young boy he grew up helping his mother run the family farm and helped to raise Glenn and Betty. During World War II he left the farm to work as a surveyor for the U.S. government on Peaks Island, Portland. When this assignment was completed, he returned to the farm and continued farming until the death of his beloved mother. Mervyn enjoyed working the earth and plants so he sold the farm and went to work for Percy Walls doing gardening and landscaping for many of the cottages on the island. It was at this time that Mervyn purchased his little home on the brook and where he peacefully passed away. Mervyn is survived by a special niece, Betty Grota of New Bedford, Mass.; and a special nephew, Glenn Manring Jr. and wife, Gale, of Hulls Cove. He had many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, who he spoke of often. Mervyn had a very special friend, Bill Hewin, who summered in Northeast Harbor, that he spoke of fondly. He was predeceased by his parents; and four brothers, Jones “Clark,” Frank, Glenn Sr. and Arthur Manring. Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at Somes Sound Cemetery, Mount Desert. Immediately after the service, friends are invited to Glenn’s house in Hulls Cove for refreshments. Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert. Condolences may be expressed at www.jordanfernald.com
