ASHLAND – Michael F. Millett, 48, died Jan. 3, 2004, at a Presque Isle hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born Jan. 19, 1955, in Portland, the son of Myron and Shirley (Cline) Millett. Michael was a 1973 graduate of Yarmouth High School and received his BS in elementary education from the University of Maine at Presque Isle in 1977. From 1977 to 2003, Michael taught fourth grade at Ashland Central School. He was involved in coaching the girls’ junior varsity basketball team at Ashland Community High School and also coached both the boys’ baseball and basketball teams at the middle school. When his children were younger, Michael was a coach for the Ashland Recreation basketball and Little League baseball programs. He was a charter member of the Boy Scout Troop No. 179, served on the boards of review, and was a merit badge counselor. Throughout the years he was active with the Ashland Area Teachers Association, serving as its president and chief negotiator along with serving on various other committees. Michael was also very involved in his community and parish. He served on the Ashland Water and Sewer District from 1998 to 2003, and as a trustee and former chairman of the Ashland Community Library. Michael was also a member and served two terms as president of the Ashland Rotary Club. In 2002, Michael was very proud to have received the Paul Harris Fellow award. Michael served two terms on the board of directors of the Aroostook Valley Health Center, one term as president and was involved in several committees of the board. Michael was a faithful communicant at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, serving as an usher and at one time serving on the parish council. He was a member and currently serving as Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 2889 of Ashland. During the summer months he was self-employed and operated Prestige Sealer and Safety Products in the area. He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Elaine (Morin) Millett of Ashland; one daughter, Andrea Millett; and one son, Brandon Millett, both of Ashland; one sister, Patricia Millett and her special friend, Amy Coha of South Portland; his mother-in-law, Frances Morin of Madawaska; one brother-in-law, Joel Morin and his wife, Francine, of Madawaska; one sister-in-law, Debbie Morin of Wisconsin. In addition, he is survived by several nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, cousins; and many good friends. Relatives and friends may call at St. Mark’s Catholic Church from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Monday and 12 noon until time of service on Tuesday. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church with Rev. Scott Mower, pastor, celebrant. Spring interment will be in the parish cemetery.
