MACHIAS – Mildred Bowker Hatt, 94, fondly known as “Snookie,” died Saturday, July 26, 2008, at Marshall Health Care. Snookie was born April 26, 1914, on Pumpkin Ridge, Marshfield, the daughter of Harlan and Eva Bowker. Snookie received incredible tender and loving care at Marshall’s for the past two years, which is greatly appreciated by her family. She leaves her family with many great memories, to be cherished for years to come and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Her first job was at Machias Five and Ten Cent store. She was employed for many years as a waitress at Machias Hotel, Ferris’s Lunch Counter and Tommy’s Lunch. Her cooking career began at Machias High School cafeteria. In 1961, Snookie and her husband, Eric, bought a drive-in restaurant business in Hoytown that they very successfully operated as Hatt’s Curb Service. She also worked for a short time at Helen’s restaurant. In 1974, she was hired as the first site manager for the Meals For Me program at Center Street Congregational Church, where she worked until she retired at age 75. She was a member of Center Street Congregational Church and Marshfield Congregational Church, where she served in many capacities. She was a wonderful, well-known cook. She had a terrific sense of humor and was an incredibly kind, caring and gentle spirit. She loved her family and friends unconditionally. They were always her priority in life, and her greatest love was caring and cooking for others. One of her favorite pastimes was entertaining her family and friends at her cottage on Fulton Lake, where she spent countless happy hours. She also enjoyed knitting, sewing, crocheting and crafts of all kinds. Whatever she attempted, she did it with great joy, zest and determination. Snookie was predeceased by her husband, Eric Talbot Hatt, in 1990. They were happily married for 51 years. She was also predeceased by her bro-ther, Wilfred “Miff” Bowker, in 1980; her brother, Bertram “Shorty” Bowker, in 1994; and her very special daughter-in-law, Eleanor “Binky” Hatt of Machias. She was also predeceased by her very close friend, Ethel Graham, in October 2007. She is survived and will be sadly missed by one son, Julian “Butch” Hatt of Machias; two daughters, Joan Babson of Blue Hill and her husband, Bill, and Susanne Carrion Brodowski and her husband, Dick, of Palmer, Mass.; six grandchildren and their spouses, Anita Campbell and husband, Kevin, of Blue Hill, Wilfred “Willie” Hatt and wife, Rebecca, of Ellsworth, Kathy Babson of Venice, Fla., Lisa Munoz and husband, Jerry, of Dover, N.H., Alma Mote of Blue Hill and Leighann, Novotney of South Hadley, Mass.; six great-grand-children, Maryssa and Meagan Hatt, Hanna and Avery Munoz and Gavin and Eric Mote; several nieces and nephews; one cousin, Howard “Howdy” Getchell of Marshfield; her very special friend, angel and adopted granddaughter, Pam Jordan; and dear friend, Ginnie Foss. Snookie’s legacy of living life and loving her family to the fullest will inspire us all in the years to come. A graveside service will be held 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, at Longfellow Cemetery, Outer Court Street, Machias. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Marshall Health Care Facility Building Fund, 9 Beal St., Machias, ME 05654.
