ISLAND FALLS and BREWER – Mildred Edwards, 93, died Dec. 9, 2005, at the Burr Elder Care Home in Brewer. Mildred was born July 25, 1912, in Oakfield, to Harlan and Gertrude (Crandall) Sprague. She was one of five children. Her siblings, Charles, Frank, Goldie and Hazel, all predeceased her. Mildred attended Merrill High School until 1930, when she ventured on to Farmington Normal School, graduating in 1932 and earning her teaching degree. She was an outstanding educator of all subjects to students in first through eighth grades. In 1937, she married Ralph Rockwell Edwards. Before Ralph died, the couple celebrated 54 years of marriage. Together they raised two children, who are surviving, their son, Frank Edwards of Orrington and their daughter, Sherry E. Hosford, of Belfast. She was an excellent homemaker, a wonderful cook and loving matriarch. In her lifetime, Mildred was an active member of the Island Falls Baptist Church, teaching Sunday school, singing in the church choir and also in a women’s trio. She was a member of the Katahdin Club for many years. Mildred had many, many friends who enriched her life greatly. Together they played bridge, went on bus trips around the United States and took care of each other and of people in their community. Mildred loved to be surrounded by people in her life. She was well loved and will be dearly missed. She is survived by both of her children, Frank and Sherry; also Frank’s children, Harlon of Orrington, Carter and wife, Patty, of Auburn and Cory and his wife, Shelby, of Boothbay; and Sherry’s children, Ralph and wife, Jessica, of Bucksport and Vicki and husband, Guy, of Belfast. Mildred enjoyed her 14 great-grandchildren as well, one of whom predeceased her. At her request there will be no funeral service at this time. Her burial will take place in the spring of 2006 at Island Falls Cemetery.
