BANGOR – Milu Brito, died April 22, 2005. She was born Maria de Lourdes Pinto Moreira de Almeida e Melo de Sousa e Brito in Lisbon, Portugal, daughter of Palmira de Jesus Pinto Moreira de Almeida e Melo and Jose Maria de Almeida e Melo. She is survived by her son, Dr. Joseph C. Brito; daughters, Maria Paula Brito of Lisbon, Portugal, Wanda Maria Brito Eynon of Massachusetts; grandchildren, Michael Joseph Brito of Massachusetts, Joao Brito Pastor, Joana Brito Pastor both of Lisbon, Portugal; nephews, Paulo de Melo and Luis de Melo, children of deceased brother, Jorge de Melo and his late wife, Victoria. Mrs. Brito was an accomplished pianist who studied at the Conservatory of Music in Lisbon, Portugal and a gifted designer of intricate and delicate crochet and knitting. Her life-long passion was her hand work and among the many legacies to her family are hundreds of unique pieces which include crocheted table cloths, bedspreads and numerous articles of clothing. In tribute to their mother’s talent, the family has chosen to drape her casket with some of her work. Mrs. Brito was a resident of Bangor since 1964, having lived previously in Binghamton, N.Y. and Peabody, Mass. after immigrating from Portugal in 1955. She was an avid gardner, known for her prodigious garden and her generous gifts to friends and neighbors of her ever multiplying plants and flowers. Mrs. Brito’s love of animals was known to anyone who saw her with her beloved poodles, Bin Bin and Tammy, her steadfast companions of many years. She was grateful for the attentive and personal care given to them by their veterinarian, Dr. Ritchie. Mrs. Brito was employed by Ward Brothers at the Bangor Mall for more than 10 years, where everyone fondly referred to her simply as “Milu”. During those years she developed enduring friendships with fellow workers and just recently hosted a reunion at her home. Mrs. Brito was very grateful for the reliable and professional services of handymen and lawn care specialists who helped her maintain her home during the many years she lived alone. Mrs. Brito’s family gratefully acknowledges the attentive and caring treatment she received from all her doctors, but especially Fred Heineman, Robert Allen, Alice Passer, William Clark, Jordan Shubert, and their staffs, as well as the staff of St. Joseph’s Hospital who so lovingly cared for her. The family also acknowledges the helpful services of the New England Denture Center. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, April 28, 2005, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Roland Nadeau, officiating. Friends may call from noon until time of the service. Interment will be private for the family.
