ST. JOHN PLANTATION Mrs. Alvine (Nadeau) Berube, 95, wife of David Berube, of 1171 St. John Road, died May 13, 2008, at a Frenchville health care facility. Mrs. Berube was born Jan. 5, 1913, in St. Francois, New Brunswick, the daughter of the late David and Dorothee (Cyr) Nadeau. She was raised in Canada and became a St. John resident in 1937 after marrying David, her husband of 50 years. In 1944, she became a U.S. citizen and was active in town as tax collector and ballot clerk. She was a member of St. John Church Choir and a member of Les Dames de Ste. Anne for many years. She was also a board member of the Senior Citizen Center, Fort Kent. In 1992, at age 79, she received her high school diploma and was honored by the commissioner of education at the State House in Augusta as the oldest Maine citizen to graduate that year. Mrs Berube had many interests. She enjoyed painting oil landscapes, gardening, birding, writing memoirs, playing Charlemagne, doing puzzles and listening to and making music. She was very fond of French Canadian folk songs and jigs. Alvine was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and sister who had a great zest for life, learning and was a woman of strong faith. She is survived by three daughters, Claudette (Berube) Decilla and her husband, Ralph, of Prospect, Conn., Betty Ann (Berube) Martin and her husband, Donald, of Bristol, Conn., Lucy (Berube) Elliott and her husband, John, of St. John Plantation; three sons, Joel Berube and his wife, Rena, of Colchester, Conn., Don Berube of St. John Plantation, and Eugene Berube and his wife, Diane, of St John Plantation. She was predeceased by two sons, James Berube of Rigolet, Labrador, and Jackie Berube who died at childbirth; two grandsons, Glenn Martin of Bristol, Conn., and Karl Berube of Fredericton, New Brunswick. She is survived by 13 grandchildren, Danielle (DeCilla) Scibek of Port Jervis, N.Y., Dominique (DeCilla) Coleman of Waterbury, Conn., Dean Berube of Colchester, Conn., Lisa (Berube) Neubert of Deep Rive, Conn., Staci (Berube) Wisinski of Valencia, Pa., David Berube of Houlton, Dominic Berube of Limerick, Steve Martin of New Milford, Conn., Rodney Martin of Bristol, Conn., Dana Martin of Bristol, Conn., Genevieve Berube Hayward of Rigolet, Labrador, Canada, Connie Berube of Woodland and Stephanie (Berube) Oliver of St. John Plantation; and daughter-in-law, Patricia Berube of Hayward of Rigolet, Labrador, Canada; plus 27 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Albert Nadeau and his wife, of Port Joli, Quebec, Henri Nadeau and his wife, Aurella, of St Francois, New Brunswick, Louis Philippe Nadeau and his wife, Nora, of St. Francois, New Brunswick; and a sister, Marie-Louise Gosselin of Levis, Quebec. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Friday, May 16, and 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 17, until time of departure for St. John Plantation, at Daigle & Nadeau Funeral Home, Fort Kent. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at St. John Catholic Church, St. John Plantation. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Restoration Fund for the Historical St. John Catholic Church.
