BRUNSWICK – Nancy B. Herlan, 72, of Pejebscot Terrace, died Friday, March 19, 2004, at Winship Green Nursing Center in Bath, after an eight-month struggle with cancer. She was born in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of Dr. Clarence Baxter and Pauline (Fisher) Brown, and grew up in Buffalo, N.Y. She attended the Elmwood-Franklin School in Buffalo, N.Y., through grade 8 and graduated from high school at Buffalo Seminary in 1949. She received a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University, and in 1968, she received a master’s degree in education from the University of Maine at Orono. After moving to Winter Harbor in 1965, she taught second and third grades for two years at the Gouldsboro Grammar School. Following a short break to complete her master’s degree, she began teaching at the Winter Harbor Grammar School in one of Maine’s early pilot programs for children with disabilities. She then moved on to teach fourth grade at Winter Harbor for the remainder of her teaching career, up until her retirement in 1991. Nancy was the cheering coach at the Winter Harbor Grammar School for many years, and coached a number of area championship cheering squads. She was much loved and viewed as a mentor by many of her students during those years. Nancy also worked as the overseer of the Grindstone Neck Swimming Pool between 1977 and 2000. Some of her favorite memories were from her summers working at the pool with the lifeguards and summer visitors whom she grew to know over the years. After her retirement from teaching, Nancy cultivated a number of hobbies, including gardening, quilting and traveling. She was a great lover of cats and also a volunteer driver with the Washington-Hancock County Agency. Nancy is survived by two sons, David B.
