NORWALK, Conn. – Stanwood Neal Hamblen Jr., a resident of Nor-walk, Conn., passed away on Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at the Rosenthal Hospice Residence in Stamford, Conn., after a short illness. He was born July 9, 1949, in Bar Harbor, the son of Marjorie (MacFarland) Hamblen and the late Stanwood N. Hamblen Sr. He attended schools in Southwest Harbor, graduating from Pemetic High School in 1968. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed out of San Diego Naval Station serving on the USS Oxford and the USS Ashtabula during the Vietnam War. For the past 31 years, Neal had been a valued and loyal employee of the Childs family in New Canaan, Norwalk and Darien, Conn. Boats, cars, household repairs and gardening were all a part of his responsibilities. He did all with good cheer, integrity and reliability. As a resident of the Norwalk community for the past 20 years, he had been an active member of the Marvin Beach Neighborhood Association and an invaluable participant of their annual 4th of July celebration. His fun-loving nature made him a favorite with the residents of the neighborhood, both young and old. Neal had a lifelong joy of repairing and fixing things. He loved to read, was an avid gardener and enjoyed collecting puzzles, games and brain-teasers. Neal was a thoughtful and giving person who was always willing to lend a helping hand to a neighbor or friend in need. Neal will be remembered for his acts of kindness and for putting others ahead of himself right up to the end. Neal is survived by his mother, Marjorie Hamblen of South Gardiner; a sister, Carol White of Westbrook and her children, Michael White and his wife, Trina, Alison Libby and her husband, Steven, and their two children, Savannah and Evan and Mathew White; and a sister, Jennifer Wheeler and her husband, Mark, and their two sons, Andrew and Jonathan of Lancaster, Mass. Neal was a wonderful son, brother, uncle, friend and neighbor, and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
