Retired U.S. Navy HOWLAND – Newton B. York, 70, died May 22, 2007, at a Lincoln hos-pital after a long illness with lung disease. He was born Feb. 13, 1937, in Buffalo, N.Y., the son of Clyde B. and Isabel C. (Newton) York. He graduated from Riverside High School, attended Buffalo State, and was trained as an OMC/Mercury outboard technician. Mr. York was in the U.S. Navy, retiring after 20 years of service. Newton achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, the National Smallbore Rifle record, the U.S. Navy Steel Band, and was on the staff of School of Music. Newton also enjoyed golfing, table tennis, boating, and fishing. Newton is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Jane C. (Costigan) York; a son, Michael Allen York of Lynnwood, Wash.; a daughter, Michelle Ann York of Lynnwood, Wash.; two stepdaughters, Kerry L. Stone and Jeff Love of Dover-Foxcroft, and Catherine M. Kessler and her husband, Michael, of Litchfield; one grandson, Dustin Allen York of Missoula, Mont.; three stepgrandchildren, Michelle Langston, Mindy Merrill-Maguire and Derrick Merrill; and one nephew, Robert L. Jones of Buffalo, N.Y. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 26, at Howland Methodist Church. After the service refreshments and fellowship will continue in the church hall. Interment will be at a later date in Delevan, N.Y. The family requests no flowers.
